Solid Copper vs. Plated Iron: Why We Use Brass for Luxury Lighting

When you are shopping for a large crystal chandelier, you might notice a confusing price gap. Two chandeliers can look almost identical in a photo online, yet one costs $500 and the other costs $3,000.

Why the difference?

While the crystal quality plays a role, the biggest secret lies in the metal framework. It is the difference between "Fast Fashion" and "Fine Jewelry."

At Tooga, we insist on using 100% Solid Copper/Brass for our structures. Today, we are pulling back the curtain to explain why materials matter—and why "Plated Iron" is a compromise we refuse to make.

1. The Rust Factor: Longevity vs. Landfill

The most critical difference is simple chemistry.

Iron (and steel) is a ferrous metal. No matter how well it is painted or plated to look like gold, if the underlying metal is iron, it is prone to rust. Over time, humidity in the air causes the plating to bubble and peel, exposing the grey metal underneath to oxidation. Once a chandelier starts to rust, it cannot be fixed—it has to be replaced.

Copper and Brass, on the other hand, are non-ferrous metals. They do not rust.

Instead, copper naturally oxidizes over decades to form a "patina"—a protective layer that adds depth and character (think of a vintage saxophone or an antique bronze statue). This is why copper lighting is considered an heirloom. It is built to outlast the building it hangs in.

2. The "Magnet Test": How to Spot a Fake

How do you know if a "Gold" chandelier is real copper or just painted iron?

There is a simple trick professionals use: The Magnet Test.

  • Iron/Steel is magnetic. If a magnet sticks to the arm of the chandelier, it is iron.

  • Copper/Brass is NOT magnetic. If the magnet falls off, you are looking at a higher quality, solid metal.

We encourage our customers to test our fixtures. We build them solid because we have nothing to hide.

3. Depth of Color: A Rich Glow vs. A "Shiny" Finish

Have you ever seen a light fixture that looks "too shiny" or "plastic-like"? That is usually the sign of electroplating over a cheap base metal.

Solid Copper has a weight and a warmth that cannot be faked. Because the material itself is gold/bronze in color all the way through, the finish looks deep, rich, and substantial. It absorbs and reflects light in a way that feels luxurious and organic.

When you hang a large chandelier in your foyer, it becomes a focal point. The material quality is visible even from a distance. A solid copper fixture elevates the entire room, whereas a plated iron fixture can cheapen the look of high-end furniture.

4. Stability and Safety

Large crystal chandeliers are heavy. When you are hanging 50lbs or 100lbs of crystal above your head, structural integrity is paramount.

Copper and brass are softer than iron, which allows our artisans to cast and bend them into intricate, detailed shapes that are impossible with stiff steel. Yet, they are incredibly durable and resistant to brittle snapping. When we craft a large fixture, the solid metal frame ensures that it holds its shape and safety for generations.

The Verdict: An Investment, Not an Expense

Buying a large chandelier is an investment in your home.

If you choose a plated iron fixture, you are saving money today, but you are likely buying a product that will degrade in 5-10 years. If you choose Solid Copper, you are acquiring a piece of art that maintains its value and beauty forever.

At Tooga, we believe true luxury stands the test of time.
